The Lithuanian National Drama Theatre
2006-11-13 16:29

The Lithuanian national drama theatre was founded in 1 9 4 0. Today the repertoire of the theatre consists of the classical dramaturgy of the world and the works of the modern dramatists of the 20th century (Sophocles, W. Shakespeare, F. Garcia Lorca, Bernard-Marie Koltès, S. Beckett, R. Harwood, B. Strauss, F. Dostojevsky) and plays of the contemporary Lithuanian writers (S. Parulskis, H. Kunčius and others).

All the most famous Lithuanian theatre directors worked on the stage of the Lithuanian national drama theatre: Borisas Dauguvietis, Juozas Rudzinskas, Romualdas Juknevičius, Kazimiera Kymantaitė, Irena Bučienė, Henrikas Vancevičius, Algirdas Lapėnas. The latter has been the artistic director of the theatre till 1 9 8 9 and directed the dramatic trilogy of Justinas Marcinekvičius "Mindaugas", "Mažvydas", "The Cathedral" - some of the mors important plays in the history of the contemporary Lithuanian theatre.

From 1 9 9 5 Rimas Tuminas became the artistic director the Lithuanian national drama theatre. He worked here from 1979 till 1990, afterwards he created the famous Small theatre of Vilnius and directed "The Cherrie Orchard" by Anton Chekhov, "Galileo" by Berthold Brecht, "Smile Upon us Lord" by Grigorijus Kanovičius there. In 1996 he directed one of the most interesting pieces of contemporary Lithuanian dramaturgy - "Lituanica" by Saulius Šaltenis in 1998, "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles, in 1999 - "King Richard The Third" by William Shakespeare.

From 1 9 9 0 a new generation of Lithuanian theatre directors started to appear on the stage of the Lithuanian national drama theatre. Oskaras Koršunovas is the most interesting and provoking among them. He studied theater direction in Lithuanian Music Academy under the guidance of Vaitkus. Koršunovas` directions of famous avant-garde writers Daniil Charms and Alexander Vvedensky trilogy "There to be Here", "Old Woman" (later "Old Woman 2") and "Hello Sonya New Year") have won a number of prizes at important international theater festivals and continue to attract attention of Lithuanian and foreign audience. The last productions of Oskaras Koršunovas - "P.S. Byla O. K." by Sigitas Parulskis and "Roberto Zucco" by Bernard Marie Koltès set up an atmosphere of vivid discussions among the Lithuanian theatre professionals and theatergoers.

In 1 9 9 8 this theatre gained the right to be called the National theatre (before that it had the name of Academical.

In 2 0 0 1 the Lithuanian national drama theatre became the member of the European Theatre Convention. This new position enables the repertoire theatre, which company consists of 35 actors and which has in its repertoire more than 20 performances, to work in three directions: staging the plays by the Lithuanian authors, supporting the young directors and actors. That is why in the last season the performance by the young directors Povilas Laurinkus (Mark Ravenhill`s "Some Explicit Polaroids"), Rokas Ramanauskas (Samuel Beckett`s "The Krapp`s Last Tape"), Saulius Mykolaitis (Daniil Charm`s "Stop Machine") appeared on the stage. We presented to our public the play by the Lithuanian writer Vanda Juknaitė "The Formula" (dir. by Gytis Padegimas), soon the play by Herkus Kunčius "The Seized Devil" (based on the works of Lithuanian classical woman - writer Žemaitė, directed by Valdas Pranulis) and the dramatization of the wonderful novel of Marius Katiliškis (dir. by Julius Dautartas). By all means, the Lithuanian national drama theatre is interested in the modern drama, too. Our audience can see "Offending the Audience" by Peter Handke (dir. by Valentinas Masalskis), we also wait for the premieres of "The Guest" by E. E. Schmitt (dir. by Vytautas Dapšys) and Howard Barker`s "Europeans", staged by the director from Croatia Lary Zappia. These are the most important works of our theatre, but that is not all. Our actor Saulius Mykolaitis, whose debut in directing was interesting and creative ("Stop Machine") together with his colleagues started the rehearsals of Anton Chehov`s "Ivanov", another actor Šarūnas Puidokas is working with his play "The Stepfather". We are also planning the performance for the children in Christmas and the intellectual comedy of Jean Anouilh "The Navel". All this we are going to present in the coming 62nd season of our theatre.
