Ukmergė, the centre of district was built in the year 1225. The lands Deltuva and Pabaiskas played very important role in the beginning of Lithuanian state creation. The first president of Lithuania Antanas Smetona and many other famous people were born in Ukmergė. Ukmergė is very proud of this fact. The town was always a traditional centre of industry, because the city is in a very convenient geographic location. Ukmergė is known for its furniture producers, metalware producers, light industry, craftsmen. The town has several strong sides – historically formed administrative centre, convenient geographic location, human resources, well developed infrastructure, activities of nongovernmental organizations. Using these features people try to make their district a nice place to live.

1. "Ukmergė" is a private hotel in the centre of a city. It is a small and cosy hotel, where everyone can feel at home. Hotel has 14 single and 8 double rooms with TV, WC and shower. Hotel can accept up to 35 persons at the same time. The restaurant and bar is decorated with hand-made furniture. Here you can have a good time as well as good meals. In the summertime guests can sit in a terrace full of flowers. Cooks do their best to make you leave the restaurant in a good mood. The staff can communicate in English, German and Russian. RURAL TOURISM FARMSTEADS

1. Gintautas Petronis farmstead having 5 bedrooms, ballroom (up to 50 people), kitchen, WC and shower, was built in 1999. Here you can find 22 beds. Territory of the farmstead covers 1 hectare and is surrounded by the waters of Alaušas lake from two sides. Here you can be in touch with nature, play basketball and other games, celebrate or hold business seminars, conferences. 10 meters from the lake there is a cosy Russian style bathhouse where 12 people can bath. Near the house there is a stone lee, where you can spend an evening near the fireplace, have a barbecue and wait for the sunset…

2. Jelena Žvinienė modern farmstead with ethnographical elements is located near the Žirnajai lake which is one of the biggest lakes in Ukmergė district. Active recreation services are offered here. Near the farmstead there is a tennis court, basketball and volleyball grounds. There is a Russian style bathhouse on the bank of the lake. Žirnajai lake is full of fish so fishermen will like it. You can smoke or roast your catch at the place.

3. Kamilė Bajorinienė farmstead "Juodasis Namas" ("Black House7quot;) is located between the Šventoji river and Vepriai lake. The place is remote and quiet. The farsmstead`s territory is 13 ha. In the guest house there are 5 double and 2 single rooms with all facilities. There is an airy hall with a fireplace where parties, seminars and trainings can be organized. In the cosy kitchen the food is made from ecologically clean products and menu can be given in advance. The farmstead also has a summer house with two double rooms, lounge, fireplace and kitchenette in it. In former freezing room there is a small bar with fireplace.

You can also find Russian sauna here. On the island of the pond there is a Norwegian open air sauna (hot tub). In the Summer time you can go boating with a boat gouged out of the big log. And in the Winter you can go skating on the ice of the pond. On the river bank there is a quiet and cosy beach, not far from it you can find a natural mineral water source. Boats and pedalos are available for rent.

6 km away there is Moko`s stone – one of the biggest in Lithuania. You can reach it by bicycle or by foot enjoying the nice views. The boat tours in Šventoji river from Ukmergė down to the farmstead are organized.

In the swamp near the farmstead there are a lot of different birds and you can also watch the life of beavers...

4. Vytautas Masiukas ethnographic style farmstead is located in a cosy outer wood meadow near the small lake. Owners do not live there. It is a good place for people who like an undisturbed recreation.

5. Birutė Norušaitienė farmstead is located in a convenient place – from the highway Vilnius- Panevėžys turn to the road leading to Gailiūnai and after 0,5 km you will find Urniežiai village and if you turn left and go a few hundred meters more you will find a Birutė Norušaitienė farmstead.

The farmstead is very spacey and has a lot of flowers in it (in the summer time, of course). The house is surrounded by the forest from three sides and by the meadow from the fourth side. You can find two big ponds near the farmstead. On the bank of one of the ponds there is an old sauna which is renovated and cosy.

On the other side of the farmstead there is a big arbour with large tables where a big company can have a good time. If it is cold outside, you can move to the house – half of the house is occupied by a big hall for the parties. In the opposite side of the house and in lofts there are small but cosy bedrooms.
Owners do not provide catering, but if asked hostess can serve one of her delicious dishes.

CULINARY HERITAGE

1. Kurėnai inn is a member of Aukštaitija region culinary heritage. It is located in a nice place near Kurėnai lake which is in Ukmergė district not far from the highway "Via - Baltica". The guests who enter the inn with original interior are leaded by romantic spirit of ancient times and by a modern comfort. Here you can find a hall and a fireplace. There is a playground for children as well. You can go boating or try the pedalos in the lake. Wide choice of meals. Especially delicious barbeque meals. The meals are made only after ordering and served in stoneware pots which preserve the heat longer. This is a nice place where you can have a nice meal alone or with the friends or just have a glass of wine or beer, a cup of coffee and enjoy a nice landscape.

2. "Geras skonis" shop - also a member of Aukštaitija region culinary heritage. In the manufactory which is set up according to EU requirements different smoked, roasted, boiled meat articles and ready-to-cooks are produced. They are: sausages, wursts, piglets, pig heads, ears, hams, tenderloins and roasts. Especially nice are the products made following the culinary heritage recipes. We do not use any food substitutes, artificial additives and colouring.

3. Petroniai village handicraft house was found by the initiative of village community in 2002. It is not only the place for community members‘meetings but also the place where traditional village crafts are preserved and practised. Here the traditional Lithuanian bread is baked, the cheese is pressed and the dumplings are boiled. Traditional tools and home made products are used for these works. The commission of culinary heritage had certified 10 sorts of the cheese, other milk products and a few bread products from Petroniai village in 2004 and accepted Petroniai to the culinary heritage foundation.

TRADITIONAL EVENTS

1. Traditional festival of Ukmergė town – during this festival you can see spectacular processions, exhibitions, plays, different dance groups and choirs, best poets reading their lines. Everybody can taste cakes made by the bakers of Ukmergė district, listen to folk music chapels and to pop music bands. The festival is organised every year on the 30-31 of March.

2. Pageant of Deltuva battle – every second year, near the small town Deltuva the spectacular pageant of Deltuva battle is organised. This is the town festival as well.

3. "Klėtelė" – the festival of amateur theatres. The festival is organised every year in May in Deltuva town. About 10 amateur theatres form Ukmergė district participate in the festifal every year.

4. Užgavėnės and Joninės celebrations – every year are organised near Kurėnai lake. Dancing around the fire, different competitions and snacks.

5. Vepriai Calvary wake – every year on the Whit Sunday.

6. "Ant kalno klevelis" (Little maple on the hill) – international folklore festival on Ukmergė mound (every second year). July 6.
